New York Daily News lists top 5 must-hear K-pop groups!

MANILA, Philippines – With the holding of the first K-pop concert at Madison Square Garden in New York City recently, American newspaper New York Daily News ran a story on K-pop.

Since the turn of the millennium South Korea has been pumping out dramas and music videos as a means of influencing the broader culture throughout Asia. South Korean president Lee Myung-bak ranked K-Pop as one of the country's greatest achievements in an August speech celebrating Korea's independence from Japan,” the widely circulated newspaper said.

NY Daily News picked the top 5 K-pop groups that “will help immerse you in the world of K-pop.”

They are 2NE1, Big Bang, Super Junior, TVXQ and 2PM.

NY Daily News said noted 2NE1 for their “anthems on girl power and boy bashing” and fashion sense.

Unlike other Korean girl groups who capitalize on sex appeal or being saccharine and cutesy, this group rose to the top of the charts for their anthems on girl power and boy bashing,” it said.

The newspaper said 2NE1’s “fierce” fashion, wearing clothes by “Alexander McQueen, Gareth Pugh, Proenza Schouler, Balmain and Jeremy Scott, who has become one of the band's biggest supporters.”

As for Big Bang, 2NE1’s big brothers at YG Entertainment, NY Daily News said the boy band “has since become one of Asia’s most recognizable acts.

It seems like Asia's not the only place they're receiving attention,” it said.

On the other hand, Super Junior was described as “one of South Korea’s biggest ‘hallyu’ groups.

NY Daily News said, “How do you get attention from tween girls everywhere? Stick as many good-looking guys as possible on a stage. The 12-member Super Junior has already been deemed one of South Korea's biggest ‘hallyu’ groups by the BBC and they have a far reach of fans from Slovenia to Peru, where they were named one of the 30 ‘Sexiest Men in the World.’”

Boy band 2PM was described by the newspaper as “Chippendale-like” because of their six-pack abs that the group displays during performances and acrobatics.

While other boy bands captured attention through their pretty-boy images, this group capitalizes on their masculine look,” NY Daily News said of boy band 2PM.

It added, “The six-member group focuses on heavy acrobatics and intricate dance moves and has become almost Chippendale-like — without the cheesy bow ties.

Duo TVXQ was noted for choreography and voices.

With tight choreography and impressive pipes, this dynamic duo has become the epitome of K-Pop: slick dance moves, stellar musical productions and big voices to boot,” NY Daily News said.

Yuna, "2NE1 divides Malaysian Best New Bands Vote"!

Folk pop singer songwriter Yuna might be a sensitive soul, but she’s also a clear headed realist. In a recent interview, we asked the singer who she thought would win the Best New Bands competition and she pointed to 2NE1.

Unlike Ghostpoet and La Vida Bohemé, it’s not that she’s being self-deprecating. She just knows how popular 2NE1 is in Malaysia. Her fans are voting for her, she explained, but they’re also voting for 2NE1:

"I have a feeling the Korean group, 2NE1 is going to win it. They have a huge fan base, it’s crazy. Even in Malaysia! I still get tweets from people saying, “Oh, I’m going to vote for Yuna, but I am also going to vote for 2NE1.K-pop is really huge in Malaysia."

Yuna wins the Malaysian version of Grammys, had her album for sale in Malaysian 7-11s, and has her own horde of fans, so that’s saying something.

2NE1 may be the favorite to win, but there are a few other names in the race that got Yuna’s attention:

"I came across Skrillex, I heard it before. It was kind of cool to be on the same list as Skrillex! Wow! He will probably win it. I am really curious about the guy and girl duo, Angus and Julia Stone. Out of all the finalists, I would find out more about them."

NYDailyNews discusses the Hallyu Wave of 2NE1 and more!

With fans streaming into the Tri-Delta area from places as far as Canada and Florida to attend the KBS – New York Festival earlier this month and SMTOWN New York which takes place at Madison Square Garden tonight, New York City has been the latest to directly experience the effects of the Hallyu Wave! New York Daily News recently published a feature article on this worldwide phenomenon, highlighting the excitement that’s invigorating fans in the city this week.

When B2ST and 4minute recently performed at the MTV TRL Studios, a crowd gathered outside for hopeful glimpses of the idols. After seeing the frenzy outdoors, MTV’s executive vice president Peter Griffin commented, “I haven’t seen this in years … It reminds me of when ‘N Sync was here and the fans lined up around the studio.

Cedarbough Saeji, a Ph.D. candidate at UCLA in culture and performance with a focus on Korean culture, commented, “[K-pop music videos are] just slick, extremely well produced, always have different themes that really capture audiences’ attentions … The production value is very sophisticated. Every k-pop video is as high quality as any top American act like Lady Gaga or Britney Spears, but the image is a lot cleaner, less sexualization.

The feature also highlights the Wonder Girls‘ upcoming official debut in the American tween market with their TeenNick movie as well as their past experiences with the Jonas Brothers and more. Furthermore, 2NE1 has “become designer Jeremy Scott‘s muses”, inspiring the shoe “JS Collage Wings x 2NE1″ which will debut next month. The article continues, “The group’s look — high fashion with a colorful, punky twist — has even inspired some updated costumes in the new production of Broadway’s ‘Rent’.“.

YG FAMILY Concert in Japan aiming for 30 billion won in ticket sales!

YG Entertainment is shooting for the largest ticket sales in the shortest time in the Korean music industry history.

YG Entertainment will hold a total of 4 concerts titled, "15th Anniversary YG Family Concert" with 2 dates in Kyocera Dome in Japan (1/7 and 1/8/2012) and the again 2 dates in Saitama Super Arena near Tokyo (1/21-1/22/2012).

Given the fact that 2NE1, managed by YG Entertainment, has sold out their Japanese tour starting the end of September through the beginning of this month and that Big Bang’s Daesung will be back after 8 months on hiatus after the car accident, YG Family’s first Japanese concert has many aspects that can draw a lot of attention. It’s expected that the tickets will be sold out.

If the concerts in Japan are sold out, it will gather a total of 160,000 in the audience. SM Entertainment has gathered about 150,000 people for the 3 dates in September at Tokyo Dome and this would push their numbers above and beyond.

As verified by Star News, YG Family concert ticket in Japan will sell for 12,800 Japanese Yen, which translates to about 190,000 KRW. If all 160,000 tickets are sold, the ticket sales alone will bring in 30,300,000,000 KRW ($26.26 million at press time).

Such sales would be the largest sum in the shortest time period by any Korean artist or any company brand concert.

The 15th anniversary of YG Entertainment is celebrated with the YG Family Concert in Korea as well, in December this year. On December 3rd and 4th, there will be 3 concerts at the Seoul Gymnastics Stadium with 40,000 audience members. 2NE1 attends the opening of Balmain in Ginza Japan!

The stylish ladies of 2NE1 who are often dressed in Balmain attended the store opening of Balmain's first flagship store in Ginza, Japan on September 16, 2011.
Leader, CL (이채린) was most likely the one dressed with the most expensive clothing from Balmain. The suede fur jacket alone, cost a whopping USD$12,475.00. A distressed sequin blous and jeans also from Balmain Fall/Winter 2011 and Christian Louboutin Ziggy booties to complete her pretty bad-ass look.

Minzy (공민지) was my least favorite at the event. As much as I love the metallic nappa leather blazer on the runway, I can't say the same on her. The color doesn't work with her lilac hair.
Park Bom (박봄) wore a metallic blouse from Balmain Fall/Winter 2011 collection. I love how the blouse was styled differently with a knot, those earrings are pretty major. Christian Louboutin Ziggy booties to complete her outfit. The only bad thing about it is.. you don't know if she's wearing any pants in this picture.

Sandara Park (박산다라) opted for a much sportier outfit. Styling her metallic bomber jacket from Balmain Fall/Winter 2011 with black denims and a pair silver sandals.

The complete men's and women's ready-to-wear line, accessories, bags and shoes are available at Balmain's flagship store in Ginza, Japan.

The fashionista wrote, “Introducing Dadoong who has been selected as the ‘NG King’! *Clap! Clap! Clap!* kekeke.  I had to hold him still by force in order to shoot the video. Girl group 2NE1 is continuing their dominance in Asia as they will be advancing to further promote their music in Thailand and Vietnam.

According to their agency, 2NE1 put on a successful debut concert in Japan in September for over 70,000 fans, and they have plans to make their debut in Thailand and Vietnam as well in order to enlarge their sphere of activities.

The girls who are currently promoting in Japan will hold their very first ‘NOLZA‘ concert in Thailand on the 29th at the Impact Hall in Bangkok, despite being busy working as models for Yamaha Thailand.

And in addition to Thailand, They will also be greeting their fans in Vietnam at a collective concert to take place in Hanoi on November 19th. 2NE1 will be the only Korean artists to take place in the particular show.

The concert is a public service event put on by the KOTRA in Vietnam as well as Silk Road CNT, and it is an effort to offer assistance to Vietnamese teenagers and will serve as an opportunity for Korea and Vietnam to share and exchange pop cultures.

A representative from Silk Road CNT stated, “We have heard that 2NE1 is the most popular Korean artist among Vietnamese teens and therefore we decided to invite them to represent Korean artists at the concert… The event is being held with good intentions, so not only is the Vietnamese government particularly interested in the event, but all of the major Korean enterprises in the area are also showing their interest and support.

The ladies of 2NE1 will be releasing their single in Japan on November 16th, and will greet their Korean fans once again at the YG Family Concert in December.

Adidas Originals to sell 2NE1-inspired shoes from Jeremy Scott in November!

A few days ago, Sandara Park showed off her new kicks from famous fashion designer, Jeremy Scott. The close friendship between Scott and girl group 2NE1 has been making headlines for a while now, but it’s just been revealed that he’ll be showcasing a line of footwear inspired by his fierce amigos.

The designer revealed that many of his projects were inspired by musicians and artists, and 2NE1 were his latest muses. He wanted to directly express the inspiration he received from 2NE1, and so he came up with the collection, ‘JS Collage Wing x 2NE1′.

‘JS Collage Wings x 2NE1′ has elements derived from 2NE1′s music, character, fashion style, and individual member qualities. In order to express the mix-and-match style unique to 2NE1, he decided to incorporate the use of the collage technique.

Meanwhile, ‘JS Wing 2.0 Satin is made of pure white satin material and decorated with wings to evoke an angel design.

Adidas Originals will release Jeremy Scott’s ‘JS Collage Wings x 2NE1′ and ‘JS Wings 2.0 Satin’ in Korean branch stores sometime in November.
