Yang Hyun Suk discusses 2NE1’s unique promotion style

On July 28th, YG Entertainment’s Yang Hyun Suk sat down for an interview with Star News and shared his feelings on 2NE1’s “Ugly topping digital charts for the fifth time in a row. He also discussed the group’s unique promotion style.

Yang stated:
“Before, people used to buy albums and listen to all of the tracks included inside. Songs that weren’t the title track would gradually gain interest as time went on. However, the way consumers purchase music has changed in that it’s now centered around online and mobile sites. Even if artists release full albums, it’s usually only the title track that gets listened to.
You can’t change the way the world is moving, so I had to accept that, but I still wondered whether there was a way to let our fans listen to every song on an album. That is why 2NE1 is releasing five new songs over the course of several weeks.
It’s probably the same elsewhere, but YG Entertainment really spends a lot of time on every single song and music video. There wasn’t one unworthy song in 2NE1’s new mini-album, which is why every song is like a child to the members, to producer Teddy, and to me.
We came up with a new promotion style to make sure that each song was heard, and we’re very grateful that the fans are enjoying all five tracks. Including 2NE1, fans will be able to see the musicians of YG giving their best in singing and producing each and every one of their songs.”

2NE1 is sitting pretty with an all-kill for “Ugly”!

2NE1 makes another all-kill with “Ugly” on the various music charts for the fifth consecutive time, setting a new record.

Recently, the OSTs for the entertainment program, ‘I Am a Singer‘, has been shaking up the music charts, but 2NE1 showed off their strong power by quickly taking over the music charts.

2NE1 is not only popular in Korea, but has become a global name. Already, through Youtube’s global SNS network, 2NE1’s videos has cumulatively gained a huge number of hits, securing a global fanbase.

This month, their agency, YG Entertainment, has joined together with avex in creating a new label as they will target Japan’s music market this fall.

On July 26th, ‘2NE1 TV LIVE: WORLDWIDE‘ also showed the first part of the chorus for “Ugly”, as the emotional melody describes of a hurt woman.

But 2NE1 is not planning to rest anytime soon as 2NE1 will hold its first concert, ‘NOLZA‘, from August 26th to the 28th.

MBLAQ’s Thunder talks about Sandara’s radical hairstyles

MBLAQ’s Thunder expressed his opinion regarding his sister 2NE1’s Sandara Park’s radical hairstyles.
On an interview with TV Report, he said,
I’ve got a shocking personality too. I’m jealous that my sister has songs that fit that kind of hairstyle.
The truth is that I don’t see my sister’s hairstyle changes in person, but rather, I see then through music videos and broadcasts. After seeing them I think, ‘That’s my sister, as usual’.
Some people wonder why she does those kinds of hairstyles when there are other pretty hairstyles that she can do, but the truth is, that’s 2NE1. Though my sister can be pretty when she is alone, since it’s 2NE1, she can pull off those looks. And just cause she does those hairstyles, doesn’t make her less pretty.
On June 27th, when Sandara’s Vegeta hairstyle was a hot topic, she posted on her me2day saying, “I asked Thunder if he was embarrassed by me. He laughed and said, ‘No’

Meanwhile, MBLAQ released their 3rd mini album ‘Mona Lisa‘ on July 12th.

YG Entertainment fans in London hold a flash mob asking for a concert!

On July 9th, London reflected the power of the Hallyu wave, thanks to a flash mob event asking for YG Entertainment to bring their artists over for a concert.

Amazingly, the person behind this large-scale event was none other than an 18-year-old Korean girl, Katy.  Impressed by her passion, reporters from Star News sat down for an interview with Katy to hear her thoughts on the K-pop wave.  Check it out below!
Q. “Why did you decide to open a flash mob event?

Katy: “I was in charge of running a K-pop contest at our Culture Center. I noticed that the most performed songs were from YG Entertainment artists.  After finding out that there was a Big Bang fanclub in London, I decided to prepare this event.”

Q. “Was the recent SM Entertainment concert in Paris an influential factor?

Katy: “I mustered the bravery to start my own after seeing SM. I heard that there were talks of inviting YG artists at a world-famous cultural festival, so I wanted to hurry up and start one to raise awareness.”

Q. “Realistically, how many people listen to K-pop in London?

Katy: “Koreans talk about it a lot to their friends. Before, it was usually listened to by people who switched from listening to Japanese music to Korean music, but now that videos like 2NE1 are featured on YouTube’s main page, the number of listeners is growing at a faster pace. People my age look at YouTube, Facebook, and other Hallyu sites for K-pop.”

Q. “What is so captivating about K-pop to fans there?

Katy: “They think that English music has been here for such a long time and that it’s becoming repetitive.  Korean music carries a new language and a new style, so it’s exciting when you encounter it. From performances to visuals, we feel that they exceed English artists. Everything that goes into one album, like the fashion, is really charming. There are bands here, but no idols.  It’s difficult to see a group like Big Bang where five members are dancing together.”

Q. “Were the dress code and other details for the flash mob all your ideas?

Katy: “I collected ideas and opinions on the songs and themes, and made a decision from there.  We were only going to do Big Bang and 2NE1’s songs at first, but there were also a lot of 1TYM fans.  We also recently found out about MBC’s ‘Infinity Challenge‘ songs, so we included those as well.”

Q. “What do you think is so charming about YG’s music?

Katy: “I think that there’s a nice musical balance.  It’s not Western, it’s not Eastern, it’s just a nice blend.  2NE1’s ‘I Am the Best‘ and GD&TOP’s ‘High High‘ are both popular songs. They call Big Bang’s Taeyang ‘Taeyang-nim’.

Q. “The language is obviously different, so what makes people fall in love with it?

Katy: “It may be unfamiliar because of the language, but I think that’s what makes K-pop all the more charming.  We’re also able to learn the Korean language while listening to Korean music.”

Q. “What about competition from other genres or artists?

Katy: “Fans here aren’t fans of just idols, but the entire YG label. From Teddy to Jinusean, and even 1TYM, we’re all fans of them.  The popularity of other artists is also growing.”

Q. “What do you think is necessary to raise awareness about K-pop to the general public in England?

Katy: “Having Korea CDs available for purchase in record stores and not just online will be of great help. We’re very open to new cultures. There aren’t books or CDs here, but the potential is still definitely there.”

Q. “Are you planning any other projects to spread K-pop?

Katy: “If the concert actually happens, I want to work as a promoter.  If Korean artists try just a bit more, I think we can make a big wave.  Big Bang even recorded a video for their fans here, and it’s gestures like that which touch the hearts of international fans.”

The fans also remembered to support Big Bang’s Daesung by singing “Baby Don’t Cry” in unison.

Past photo of Park Bom receives interest!

Recently on an internet community site, a 5 year old photo of 2NE1’s Park Bom singing on stage was posted. It’s been revealed that the past photo is from Big Bang’s first showcase back in 2006.

At the time of the photo, Park Bom, was singing Big Bang’s “We Belong Together” with G-Dragon and T.O.P. “We Belong Together” is a track from Big Bang’s first single with Park Bom as a featured singer.

Park Bom is shown in the photo with long straight hair that showcases an innocent image. The photo has been getting a lot of attention because she is seen as a little bit chubby and so childlike, which is very different from the strong and charismatic Park Bom that we know now.

Netizens who have viewed Park Bom’s past photo commented, “She looks so innocent and pretty,” “Does she look childlike because she is a little chubby?“, and “Go back to this time~~“.

2NE1 to make their debut in Japan with a mini-album!

Via tokyohive:

Today, it was announced that Korean girl group, 2NE1, would start releasing their three new songs on July 20th. It was also revealed that this group will make their CD debut with their new mini-album (current title unknown) on September 21st!

For their debut in Japan, the girls will gradually release various musical materials as part of their ‘countdown’. Firstly, on the 20th, 2NE1 will release their popular single, “I AM THE BEST” through Recochoku (a Japanese music distribution site for downloading songs to cell phones or PC). Afterwards, they’ll continue to release their other songs on August 10th and August 31st, before releasing their mini-album on September 21st.

Back in March, the popular girl group was supposed to debut in Japan for the first time with their single, “Go Away”. But during their stay on the 31st floor of a hotel, the earthquake struck. Since an earthquake occurs rarely in Korea, the members were severely shocked by the event and returned to their home country. At that time, they were in no condition to return to Japan due to the fear and terror they experienced from the disaster.

However, they kept on giving encouraging words of support to their Japanese fans through the internet by stating, “We want to cheer up Japan.” The leader of the group, CL (20) expressed, “As we have experienced the same shock and terror of the earthquake, we feel close and familiar to the fans. This time, we want to make our stage in Japan a fun place.” They’ve also announced that they’ve already made plans to go to Japan. During this trip, they will appear on television programs and other activities for their debut, as originally scheduled before the earthquake.

Good luck, girls!
