The New York Times: The Best Concerts of 2012!

A concert is always more than just a rendering of songs. It’s a musical revamp, a real-time test, a spectacle, a pop-up community, perhaps a dance party or an incipient riot — and, even in the YouTube era, an ephemeral, site-specific experience. Here the pop and jazz critics of The New York Times recall some of their favorite live events of 2012, in order of importance.

JAY-Z
2NE1 Aug. 17, and BIGBANG Nov. 8, both at Prudential Center, Newark. This was the year K-pop arrived — not in the form of “Gangnam Style,” which was everywhere and yet completely evanescent — but in these arena shows, which were full of thousands of young, paying fans eager to see the girls of 2NE1 and the boys of BigBang, groups with zero American hits between them, but rabid American followings all the same.

Big Bang and 2NE1 make MTV Style’s list of ‘Best Band Style of 2012′!

Big Bang and 2NE1 have made MTV Style‘s list of the ‘Best Band Style of 2012‘.

The two YG Entertainment groups are the only Asian artists to make the list of 10, which includes One Direction, The Wanted, Backstreet Boys, Spice Girls, Destiny’s Child, Fun, HAIM, and No Doubt.

MTV wrote on 2NE1:

“K-Pop had a GIGANTIC year in 2012, partly because of ‘Gangnam Style‘ and partly because the genre is CHOCK FULL of boy bands and girl groups. MTV Style has a soft spot for 2NE1 thanks to their propensity for all things bold and colorful and their enviable closeness with Jeremy Scott.”

Big Bang:

“Speaking of bold and colorful… We are OBSESSED with Big Bang. The K-Pop boy band is a five-dude unit of unbridled energy, hyper-saturated streetwear, tonsorial risk-taking, and uhh, they wear MINX NAILS SOMETIMES. *faints*”

Big Bang previously made headlines on MTV for their style. This past September, G-Dragon and T.O.P received attention for their Minx Nails. The group’s songs “Blue” and “Bad Boy” also made the spotlight.
In related news, Big Bang will be holding their ‘Alive GALAXY World Tour‘ from the 8th to the 10th in Hong Kong, while 2NE1 continues on their 7-country, 11-city ‘New Evolution‘ tour.

YG Entertainment rakes in 13.8 million USD and counting for 2012!

YG Entertainment has currently brought in more than 15 billion KRW (approximately 13.8 million USD) so far this year.

The amount includes the profits brought in by artists active in 2012 such as  Se7en, Big Bang, G-DragonPSY, and 2NE1, but because it has currently only counted up to September of this year, additional profits from Psy, Epik High, and Lee Hi will be added on later. With the new earnings counted later for the fourth quarter, the total is expected to jump even more. The 15 billion KRW estimate is about a 17% increase from last year’s 12.8 billion KRW (approximately 11.8 million USD) revealed during the same quarter.

Experts are expecting a large profit from Psy, who recently has won or will win awards at the MTV EMA and AMA, as well as from Epik High and the ‘monster rookie’ Lee Hi, who is continuing to dominate music charts.

Park Go Eun reveals the hard work her young sister Park Bom put in to become a singer

Park Bom‘s older sister Park Go Eun revealed the hard work put in by Park Bom on tvN‘s “Baek Ji Yeon’s People Inside“.

On the show, Park Go Eun stated, “When my sister said she was debuting as a member of 2NE1, I didn’t think much about it, but I know how much she cried. She put in so much work and became a singer after failing 5 auditions. When she stood on stage, she looked great. When I see her on stage, I realize how good she is more so than when she sings at home. I guess the reason for that is because she’s my sister.

Dara previously shared that she was a bit confused about what to do with her hair next.

However, recent photos of the idol at the airport seem to have thrown fans for a loop. Dara can be seen sporting cornrows. She kept the left side of her head shaven, and pulled the rest of her hair into a high ponytail.

Fans who saw the photos responded with mixed reactions: “This is a little too much“, “Her face is pretty, so any type of hairstyle suits her well“, and “Why are you doing this?“.

Dara poses with guitar strap gifted by fans!

On the 25th, Dara uploaded a photo of herself holding a guitar on her me2day.

She wrote, “I’m trying to play the practice song that I just started learning using the uber cute ‘Dara guitar strap’ that fans made me when I went to LA. I learned only two parts, but it’s hard. It’s hard this time too. When will I become the ‘Hongdae Goddess’ at this rate? Keke. I’ll try hard to learn though~ ^_^ Ssan-coustic fighting! [Strum, strum~] Dara has rented out [Park Bom]-Minzy‘s dorm living room. Am I playing the guitar melodiously at someone else’s house? It might seem like it, but the reality is that I’m just making noise.

In the photo, Dara is playing a guitar that has a “2NE1″ design as well as a strap with her name imprinted along it.

The fans who saw her post responded, “I want to see you play guitar on stage“, “I want that guitar“, ”The mood is very serious“, and “It’s not noise! Even if it is noise, I’m prepared to listen“.
