In this November, when the competition to take the No.1 place in
music charts is fiercer than ever, 2NE1 (CL, BOM, DARA, & MINZY) is
emerging as the final winner. “MISSING YOU”, 2NE1’s new single released
at midnight on the 21 this month is sweeping the top places in major
music charts for two days in a row.
2NE1’s success draws more attention, in that they are going to a
direction that is different from other girl groups. They have presented
their fans new songs frequently since July this year. In July, they hit
music charts hard with “FALLING IN LOVE”, their first-ever reggae music,
and one month later, they clearly showed their own unique color with
“DO YOU LOVE ME”.
“MISSING YOU”, released three months after that, is a song that goes
perfectly with a cold season. The song’s sound centered on a strong low
bass, synth, and rock-ballad piano, highlights 2NE1’s appealing vocal
and rich soul.” The catchy chorus where phrase “missing you” is densely
repeated in high pitch, leaves a deep impression. This new song once
again highlights the team’s unique color. Definitely, 2NE1 is different
from other girl groups.
Korean girl groups’ style can be roughly divided into three
categories: innocent, cute, sexy. The majority of girl bands such as
Girl’s Generation, KARA, Wonder Girls, Brown-Eyed Girls, Girl’s Day,
Miss A, A pink, Dal Shabet, 9muses, fall into one of those three
categories. A newly-formed group expresses their style more explicitly.
However, 2NE1 is different. This team cannot be put into one of those
categories. They staged bubbly performance for “LOLLIPOP”, tough for
I’M THE BEST”, sentimental for “IT HURTS”, and confident for “GO AWAY”.
For “FOLLING IN LOVE” which was released recently, they created a fresh
appeal, by giving off an unexpected lovely charm.
Now, we have one more category of girl groups other than “innocent”,
“cute”, and “sexy”. A “2NE1-like” style. Four members of 2NE1 do not
look like Bobby dolls, but they are attractive, always confident and
carefree, doing the music they want. They are pioneering a new direction
for girl groups, going beyond the title as a girl group.
