It has become increasingly difficult these days to find songs that don’t use autotune, particularly since the Korean music industry is saturated with idol groups.
Industry representatives gave mixed responses on the issue and were mostly divided; one side stated, “It’s fooling the ears of the public,” while their opponents argued, “Just like how dramas and movies go through a heavy editing process to deliver a stronger feel, autotuning is yet another process for music fans.”
Famous producer Jo Young Su elaborated on the issue in a recent interview with Star News. ”2NE1 has faced a lot of criticism for using autotune in their songs, but they’re already a team that has had their talents acknowledged,” he said. “They should not be receiving such backlash since they purposely added autotune under the belief that it fit their song and improved it.”
However, he went on to state, “Still, singers that use it to hide their lack of talent are definitely in the wrong. Music fans are able to check vocal talent through MR-removed videos anyway. Instead of using autotune as a sort of shield, they should improve their skills first.”
Jo concluded by affirming, “Autotune is basically a tool that has the potential to deliver its purpose when used in the proper songs.”
