2NE1 In TeENS SINGAPORE MAGAZINE(Cover story)

the cover:

2NE1: The fiercest girl group in Korea is all about girl power.

Article Title: Being 2NE1

Being a girl group that packs a punch, 2NE1 has conquered the charts with their unique sound and image. By Hidayah Idris.

2NE1: A band that was formed to appeal to anyone. And appeal to everyone, they did. Well, almost.

When YG Entertainment released the teaser video for 2NE1'
s debut, it sparked a lot of interest. After all, the group provided a fresh burst of R&b and reggae among the electro pop tunes and hook songs.

THE NEW EVOLUTION

2NE1 stands for "New Evolution of the 21st Century", and it seems the group is doing justice to their name by making music that is different from most girl groups.

Their first song, "Lollipop" was a duet with their seniors from the same agency, Big Bang. The pop/R&B number was the promotional song for LG Cyon mobile phone and served to introduce the new girl group. It opened with a sugar-coated pop tune one would expect from a girl group, but transformed into a rap and R&B-infused song. The girls showed - and proved - that they were good enough to be the female version of Big Bang.

Music aside, another factor that was starkly different about the new band was their fashion sense. Dressed in colorful costume and printed leggings, their stage outfits stood out among the other girl groups who wore identical or similar get-ups. Their costumes sparked the craze for printed leggings in South Korea.

More than just clothes, member Sandara Park quickly gained attention for her "palm tree" hairdo, in which she tied a high ponytail on her crown, making it look like a tree is perched on her head. The petite singer traded her signature ponytail for a topknot in the subsequent single and puffy hair for her solo debut. Even now, her hairstyle changes still garner interest, and fans eagerly copy her hairstyle to look like her.

Leader CL, on the other hand, was known for her shades. The rapper usually sports sunglasses during performances and in music videos, which complemented her cool personality.

INSTANT SUCCESS

The music video for their official debut single "Fire" was edgy and strong. The members took on a chameleon persona, constantly changing their image. In some parts of the video, Sandara even donned a saree (T/N: saree - headscarf)! The video was shot in two sets, space and street. Newsen reported that the videos had two miliion views in various music sites and online communities in just one day.

Their follow-up song, "I Don't Care" also took the charts by storm. With lyrics that most girls could identify with, the catchy tune and choreography was a hit among fans and non-fans alike. It took the No. 1 spot on KBS' Music Bank for five weeks, and secured top spots in Mnet's M! Countdown and SBS's Popular Song (Inkigayo).

When 2NE1 appeared on their first variety show, Strong Heart, two years ago, Sandara revealed that she was not considered to be part of the group initially. When she heard that the company was forming a new girl group, she went for karaoke sessions with G-Dragon and singer SE7EN. She had performed with all her might to prove her worth and recorded their singing sessions. Their CEO, Yang Hyun Suk, saw Sandara's performance and recruited her into the group.

Sandara Park

Real name: Park Sandara
Date of Birth: November 12, 1984
Fun fact: Sandara was a celebrity in the Philippines before debuting in the group. She was the runner-up for a talent competition and appeared in dramas, movies and commercials. After she came from a break, her popularity declined and she went back to Korea to become a trainee in YG Entertainment.

Minzy

Real Name: Gong Minji
Date of Birth: January 18, 1993
Fun Fact: Minzy grew up in Gwangju, where she attended the same dance school as Big Bang's Seung Ri and KARA's Hara. An ace in dancing, she was told by CEO Yang Hyun Suk to tone down her moves, as they were too sexy for a young girl like her.

CL

Real Name: Lee Chae Rin
Date of Birth: February 26, 1991
Fun fact: Daughter to a physics professor, CL has lived in Japan, France and USA, where she picked up the languages. Her family decided to move back to Korea after she signed on with YG Entertainment as a trainee.

Park Bom

Date of Birth: March 24, 1984
Fun fact: Bom's family migrated to the US when she was in the sixth grade. Her parents were against her studying music so she took up a course in Psychology in university. However, with her aunt's support, she transferred to Berklee College of Music.

OVERSEAS ROOTS

Prior to being a part of 2NE1, Sandara was a well-known celebrity in the Philippines. Her family migrated because her father had started a trading business there.

She joined a talent competition, Star Circle Quest, in which she came in second. The Busan-born star pursued acting in dramas, movies and commercials, and released an album, which achieved 2x platinum in sales. She took a break and returned to Korea bot when she went back to the Philippines, her popularity declined and she received few offers to appear on shows. She also revealed that her father had left the family and took off with their money.

To start anew, she moved back to Korea with her mother and brother, who is now a member of boy band MBLAQ. She signed on to YG Entertainment the next day, and later debuted in 2NE1.

Like Sandara, Bom grew up in a foreign city as an adolescent. Her family moved to the United States when she was in elementary school. She graduated from a high school in the US and pursued a course in psychology in university. While she wanted to study music, her parents were vehemently against it. With the support of her aunt, she transferred to Berklee College of Music.

The singer auditioned for YG Entertainment a few times, but was rejected repeatedly. She persevered and was eventually accepted, and scored a spot in the group.

Unlike the other two, CL can be considered a traveler. The rapper had lived in a lot of countries. Her father, who is a Physics professor, was posted to Japan, France and United States. She picked up all the languages during that period, making her fluent in four languages.

When she was accepted into YG Entertainment as a trainee in 2006, her family decided to stay in South Korea.

TRIPLE HITS

After their short hiatus, the group resumed activities. "Follow Me" was released as a surprise track on digital music sites, but there were hardly any promotions for the song. The track was also the theme song for Samsung Corby Folder mobile phone.

They made a comeback late last year with their first studio album, To Anyone, and challenged the norm by promoting three tracks simultaneously. Most artists usually promote one track - or at the most, two - and only release another (usually a song from the repackaged album) after performing their "goodbye stage" for the first song.

Netizens voiced out their concerns about the group being given special treatment. Already, many of them have voiced concerns over howPopular Song (Inkigayo) favours YG Entertainment artists. The agency reacted by announcing that the group would only perform two songs onMusic Bank and MBC's Music Core

Despite the fiasco, the group manage to clinch No. 1 spots for each song at each music show: "Clap Your Hands" took the top spot on M! Countdown; "Go Away" won first place on Music Bank, while "Can't Nobody" scored the "Mutizen Song" award on Popular Song.

VENTURING OUTSIDE KOREA

The girl group is slated to have their Japanese debut in February, under Avex. The company has witnessed the successes of Korean artists in Japan, including BoA, Tohoshinki and Girls' Generation.

They have also recorded ten English tracks with Black Eyed Peas member will.i.am, insinuating to a possible U.S. debut.

Wherever they go, the girls will definitely leave a lasting impression for being an atypical girl band from South Korea.

2NE1 mentioned in fashion editorial from American ‘Vogue’!

That’s right! Girl group 2NE1 was recently referenced in the American edition of ‘Vogue magazine.

In its March issue, ‘Vogue’ covered a story about fashion in South Korea titled, “South Korea: The Epicenter of the Shopping Universe“. In this article, Vogue states that “South Korea is fashion’s new Japan” and quotes Scott Sternberg from Band of Outsiders that South Korea is “at the forefront of consuming cute, chic, clean style.”

Carla Sozzani of 10 Corso Como, who recently opened a partnership with Cheil Industries, even praised Seoul for being more thrilling than New York or Paris at this time. She said, “It’s like [how] Milan used to be, and it’s very exciting for me.”

The article went on to state that the younger demographic in Korea these days are more individualistic and are seen sporting a rock-chic look. It stated, “…but the younger set are feeling rock-chic right now and are likely to be dressed in , say, a Junya Watanabe jumper with an Alexander Wang tee (see the pop band 2NE1).”
This article is very exciting for a couple reasons. First, it seems that South Korea is finally getting international recognition as a formidable fashion force. Second, the mention of 2NE1 in a major American (if not global) fashion magazine shows the increasing strength of the Hallyu Wave. Hopefully, as South Korea attracts more attention as a ‘fashion epicenter’, we’ll get to see more appearances of Korean celebrities worldwide.

Park Bom's round face confuses netizens

Pictures of Park Bom from the MTV-Daum Music Fest has been flying around the Internet, rousing confusion amongst netizens. In the photos, she is showing off her slender legs with a tight black minidress, but her legs earned only half the attention.
Fans were alarmed to see her upper body contrast completely with her lower body - many commented that she looked extremely skinny at the legs, but that she looked clumsy and dense above the waist. Most fans' attentions were brought to her jawline. The sharp jawline she had showed off only a short time ago had completely disappeared and her round face had come back.

When fans saw this they said, "How can her legs be so thin and her upper body so large?" and "I guess all her weight goes to her chin first." Other said, "this isn't just different, it's shocking," "She's sorta cute even with that weight," and "Is she already experiencing the yoyo effects of her diet?"

What do you think of how she looks?

Dara’s The Return of Il-Jimae Co-star Jung Il-Woo, “I’d like to invite 2NE1 to a fan meeting”

The warm thoughts of two friends, both actors and singers, Sandara Park of 2NE1 and Park Il-Woo, have become a hot topic!

In Jung Il-Woo’s recent interview with Nylon Korea for March, he was asked the question which girl group he would like to invite for a fan meeting, Sandara Park, we became friends when she appeared for ‘The Return of Il-Jimae.’ So when the opportunity comes, I’d like to invite 2NE1, he answered.

Before her debut with 2NE1, Sandara Park appeared for “The Return of Il-Jimae,” where she played the part of Rie, a Japanese girl living in a village. In the drama, she has a crush on Jung Il-Woo’s character, portraying a beautiful and unique character full of charm and cuteness. Sandara Park’s charming acting attracted attention even then.

Sandara Park and Jung Il-Woo’s hug and kissing scenes were especially given attention when the dramatic scenes unfolded.

When compared, her appearance between then and now have no diffference. In fact, Sandara Park is a “Star with Preserved Beauty the fact of which has been pointed out time and again.

“We want to be icons rather than idols” - 2NE1

Causing an uproar on the music charts with 3 title songs in the first album.

The recent music industry has been stimulated with the first official album release from 2NE1. With rumors that the songs on the album were good, there were some companies that changed the album release date to avoid clashes with 2NE1.

Like the assumptions, the first album that was released in September has gained a lot of attention. Their strategies included having three different title songs, ‘Can’t Nobody’, ‘Clap your Hands’, and ‘Go Away’. However, all three songs have place 1-3 place on the music charts. Other songs ‘It Hurts’, ‘I’m Busy’ and ‘Love is Ouch’ have all placed in the top ten.

The members who had the interview with Yeonhap news stated that had about 120,000 copies of the album come in for preorder and that they were just itching to get on stage. They showed their confidence by stating, “We wanted to show that our music and style had improved.”

◇ “Hiphop. The middle scale is our charms” - One of the reasons that 2NE1 gained so much attention was through the album release in a year since the hit songs, ‘I Don’t Care’ and ‘Fire’. Also, they tried their best to stay away from variety programs to keep the freshness in their images.

The most important fact to note is that the members had chosen hiphop and took a different path unlike the usual girl groups with Girls Generation, Kara, and more. They had also attracted female fans by displaying the strong female image in their songs.

Leader CL commented, “Hiphop plays a big role in the music color of YG. Yang Hyunsuk president wanted us to show off the charms of a female group embracing hiphop. I think that is why he experiments on us more than Big Bang.

Can't Nobody’ is classified as a “strong song” by the members. However, songs like ‘Go Away’ with a fun beat and ‘Clap your Hands’ with a hiphop beat have the melody that sounds familiar to the public.

From Hiphop to reggae, rock, and R&B, each member has their strengths in their field of music. The members had stated that they were able to show off their best thanks to the YG producers, Teddy and Kush.

Sandara stated, “Honestly, hiphop doesn’t match my voice. So Teddy oppa was able to find a part right for me in ‘Can’t Nobody’ just like he did for me in the song ‘Fire’. That was why I could have covered my weaknesses.

Gong Minji aka. the ‘’bass tone enhancer,” had showed off her skills as a singer and rapper along with CL who had been chosen as the artist who has the most “testable voice.” However even their voices were not hidden by the power vocals from Park Bom.

◇”They said we are looked like the Asian dolls from the shows ” - 2NE1 didn’t get to rest much during their break. This was because they were busy working on an American debut album with Black Eyed Pea’s Will.I.Am.

When Jinu from Jinusean showed the music video of 2NE1 at a party to Will.I.Am, he immediately showed interest and volunteered to be a producer for them.

The members had used April of last year to record with will.i.am at Los Angeles while staying at his home/studio for a week. They also went through a second round of recording in May in the studio located in London and Los Angeles.

Will.i.am told us that we looked the Asian dolls from the show. I guess he was interested in our Asian image. We even ate Samgae Tang (Korean chicken soup) and kimchi together. He was even interested in the sound of Gayageum (Korean traditional instrument) he saw on in a video. When we were working together, he tried to make a type of music that will be able to bring the two cultures together.” (Sandara)

The members said that there was a difference in the method of recording.

We recorded about 10 songs in English and those songs had all been the work of Will.I.Am himself or him and some other person. In Korea we split up the song in different parts and then record it, but Will.I.Am finished the recording after making us sing a few times all the way through. Since we weren’t used to this, we had a lot of regrets at the end.” (CL)

Even when we were talking about this, the members stated, We still can’t believe that we worked with Will.I.Am.

◇”We want to give hope to people looking for their dreams” - The members of 2NE1 in their 10s had given up their ordinary life debuting as a singer. CL, who had dropped out of high school in Junior year, was able to pass the exit exam two years ago and Gong Minji had to drop out of her high school with graduation in sight.

CL stated, “It’s sad that I won’t be able to have an ordinary life, but this is such a happy job that will be the 100% energy in me. I have no regrets.”

Gong Minji added smiling, The stage is like an addiction. Since singing and dancing had been my dreams all this time, I fall even more into those charms every time I’m on stage. These days I get the urge to make the audience go crazy.

They both agreed that they want to be a ‘positive role model’ since they got into the music industry earlier.

We want to be an icon instead of being an idol. Since presenting good music to the public is the job of a singer, we want to give hope to the ones who are working for their dreams. We want to be that confident icon that represents women.(CL)

Why do idols pick other company idols as ideal types?

All of ELF knows that Heechul adores Wonder Girls’ Sohee. Recently, Big Bang’s G-Dragon picked Yoona as his ideal type. Before, he also commented that f(x)’s Sulli was very cute on stage. This has many fans wondering why idols don’t pick girls from their own company as their ideal types and pick girls from rival companies instead.

YG Entertainment has 2NE1, and SM Entertainment has Girls’ Generation and f(x). Heechul and G-Dragon could have very well picked girls from their own company. However, many said the reason that they don’t pick the girls from their own company is that they are too close to the girls, and that they look at each other as family, not as datable subjects.

What do you think the reason is?

(ommitted non-2ne1 parts)

The trend toward a more naturalistic and approachable depiction of idol stars, according to Isak, is a positive one, and she heaped a great deal of praise on 2NE1, a four-member girl group represented by YG Entertainment:

I don’t think 2NE1 is the typical Korean pretty girl,” said Isak. “I think they’re the most beautiful girls in the world because they don’t have double eyelids; because they don’t have noses that hit the ceiling; because they don’t have that “entertainer” look that people have grown accustomed to.

Teru from Glay likes 2NE1!

Looks like a previous article was right about 2NE1, “Japanese boys are sure to fall in love with their fusion of music and fashion.” First up,Teru from GLAY who just a while ago tweeted:
Translation:
2NE1, they’re cool.
Music Videos are very high quality. Their individual personalities are perfectly balanced.
They’re very cool, and cute as well~ They seem popular with the girls.~

This is great exposure for 2NE1. For those of you who don’t know, Glay is a top-selling band in Japan. “Glay (グレイ Gurei?) (stylized as GLAY) is a rock/pop band from Hakodate, Hokkaidō, Japan formed by guitarist Takuro and vocalist Teru during high school in 1988. Glay primarily composes songs in the rock and pop genres, but they have also composed songs using elements of different styles such as reggae and gospel. As of August 2010, Glay has sold about 37.5 million in Japan, placed as the 7th best selling artist of all time in that country, according to a ranking presented on TV show “Music Station”, with data from the Oricon charts.” For 2NE1 to be getting recognition by such popular and respected artists bodes well for them as March approaches.

Seems like 2NE1 already has the beginnings of a great following in Japan. March can’t come fast enough.
